Ed Wollmann Spams Usenet

Ed Wollmann frequently sends complaints about others "spamming" even when the posts being complained about do not fall under the Skirvin guidelines. This is ironic, because Wollmann is well aware of what constitutes spam. He was TOSsed from AOL and lost 6 accounts for spamming from there. He currently enjoys another AOL account because of a personnel change (David O'Donnell, who vowed that Mr. Wollmann was banned from AOL for "life", has moved on) and apparently the current group of Admins there are sympathetic to Wollmann's situation. Wollmann also has spammed from both Earthlink and ATT Worldnet, yet thoroughly detailed spam reports to both of those providers have gone apparently unheeded.

It is important to note that while the notion of "unclean hands" may be considered, and that there are two sides in the Wollmann Flamewars, Wollmann is the only one engaging in actual Net Abuse, that is, abuse OF the Net, with his Spamming and EMP. Certainly Earthlink and ATT Worldnet should allow their user Wollmann a robust amount of Freedom of Speech, but their allowance of his spam remains a puzzlement.

(see this link for a nice, short and straight to the point FAQ about Spam.)

Following are links to pre-configured DejaNews searches, as well as locally-archived evidence of Wollmann's spam and the resultant actions taken

29 Spams from Ed's sock puppet, archimeden@aol.com (see a couple examples archived locally: here or here)

At the time of his first spamfest, Wollmann was warned his BI was rising, yet continued posting the same EMP until well past the limit.

37 Spams from Ewollmann@aol.com (see a couple examples archived locally: here or here)

Wollmann here was spamming the same FAQ as in the above EMP.

AOL cancels 86 archimeden posts after Ed's July 97 spamfest.

AOL cancels 419 of ewollmann's posts after Ed's September '97 spamfest.

AOL announces Wollmann account cancels in news.admin.net-abuse.bulletins:

For ewollmann, hoovamoon, and archimeden (9/97)

For ewollmann1, altair100, and azimech (2/98)

AOL cancels 207 of Ed's posts after cancelling his ewollmann1 account.

AOL cancels 35 of Ed's posts after cancelling his hoovamoon account.

Andrew Gierth's 11/19/98 Spam Cancel Bulletin (see entire post)

"Earthlink: please deal appropriately with your user. 20 articles were
cancelled in 20 groups. The Breidbart Index was 42.71"

Andrew Gierth's 11/20/98 Spam Cancel Bulletin (see entire post)

"9 articles were cancelled in 8 groups. The Breidbart Index was 20.08.
The cumulative Briedbart Index including previous reports is 62.79."

Earthlink's abuse report on Ed in news.admin.net-abuse.bulletins (see entire post)

"The following EarthLink subscribers have been reported for Network or
USENET abuse. Appropriate action has been taken against these
entities in accordance with the Subscriber Agreement and AUP
(Acceptable Use Policy):.... arcturian1"

7/12/99 Wollmann EMP Spam Report (see entire post)

Though the tallied BI count is incorrect in this post, the actual count was still well over the BI limit for the time period. ATT Worldnet continues to allow Wollmann to spam this same EMP from his current account.

PLEASE ISSUE CANCELS FOR EMP

Wollmann-SPAM hits the Net again.

Edmond Heinz Wollmann, posting from ATT Worldnet, has engaged in another
spree of "Followup-spamming" (following up to different posts,
repeatedly adding the same text). Or as the Skirvin Spam Thresholds FAQ
puts it, "articles which consist of inclusions of other user's postings,
but are otherwise identical". Mr. Wollmann has a history of spamming; he
has lost 6 accounts at AOL, who had to issue hundreds of cancels for his
spam, and his spam from Earthlink last November reached a BI over 60.

The articles listed here all consist of occasionally:

- a quote in full of another post (with or without headers)

But always:

- the same identical text (a.a.m charter complaint)
- a signature (always the same)

Often only the identical text of the complaint-spam is posted

In addition, all of these posts by Wollmann are complaints re: the
alt.astrology.metapsych charter and are Off-Topic in the multitude of
newsgroups he posted them in.

This Wollmann SPAM report covers the 30 day period from June 11 to July
11, 1999

ATT Worldnet: Your client's SPAM is against your AUP. Please deal
appropriately with your user.
Bigfoot.com: Your client's SPAM is against your AUP. Please deal
appropriately with your user.

The Breidbart Index for the SPAM from Mr. Wollmann's ATT Worldnet
account alone was 42.

Message ID's, Deja.com URLS (original usenet/text format), BI count and
affected newsgroups are given for reference.

Often the message ID will contain a "bigfoot.com" or other munged email
reference but the nntp headers of the articles always show
worldnet.att.net as the originating source.

Your client continues to post in violation of the

****** ANSWERS ******

1) For what sort of discussions is alt.astrology intended?

Answer: Alt.astrology is intended as a forum for astrologers of
all levels of expertise, from beginners to advanced, to discuss
astrological topics.

Alt.astrology is *not* intended as a forum for disbelievers to
voice their contempt for astrologers or to harass astrologers
about their belief in astrology and demand of them scientific
proof. Groups discussing the scientific validity of theories are
prefixed with "sci." If you wish to discuss the validity of
astrology as a discipline (as opposed to the validity of specific
theoretical statements within the domain of astrology), the
appropriate group on which to post is sci.skeptic. Here is the
statement of purpose for that group:

"Sci.skeptic is for those who are skeptical about claims of
the paranormal to meet with those who believe in the paranormal.
In this way the paranormalists can expose their ideas to
scientific scrutiny, and if there is anything in these ideas
then the skeptics might learn something."

Sci.skeptic often contains long discussions of scientific
evidence for and against specific astrological hypotheses, and
such discussion is welcome in that group. Further, many members
of that group are qualified to evaluate scientific evidence. The
astrologers in this group who enjoy participating in such
discussion with skeptics read and post to sci.skeptic.
